Isn’t it amazing how technology can be used to spread goodness? That’s my gratitude moment today. I know there’s a lot of filth in the Internet and too many people have been caught up in how the web can capture and ensnare precious souls. But we can neutralize that! We can make our voices heard in this medium and use it to declare our testimonies, share our joy in the gospel, let other people know it is so much fun to be clean, to be true and to be honest. That the real cool people are those who have meaning and joy in their lives.
I am not saying I have all those all the time. I struggle too with darkness in my soul when the world gets me down, but we can share our journey. And the Internet is a great way to do it. Where before we could not lift up a good friend if she was far away, the Lord has provided a way for us to do it now by snail mail, by email, by telephone, by weblogs, via Facebook or Friendster — and many other previously inconceivable ways! I used to belittle these things, until I realize they are different forms of communication Father has allowed to be created that meet the needs of his children all over the world who have different needs.
A sister may want spiritual nourishment but is not yet ready for a hug — yet she may appreciate reading in a blog about the life of someone somewhere in the Pacific or in Moscow who may have the same issues she is facing or a totally different life! This would have been way difficult in the age of Marconi
And you know what’s great? The leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the “geriatric society” that Mike Wallace called them (in good humor), people may think they may not be on top of what is happening. They are advanced in age and they were born when the world was relatively much younger. On the contrary, they know and they have the vision of where this thing called the Internet can do. Sure, it can be used for evil. But the call to neutralize this evil has been sent out. And we all — each one of us — can heed and obey and put our mark on the Internet, so that at least one searching soul can turn to the light instead of the dark.
If we don’t get to do that, if we don’t get to uplift someone else, perhaps…that person will be us
So spread the word. Write your own story. Declare your beliefs! Record what it is like to be an LDS in this day and age. Publish your own blog and let me know about it so we can create a community. I thank the Lord for this kindness to us — a technology we can use for so much good and leaders who know where to lead the Church in this digital age.
